Fitted Corsetry

People often view corsets as uncomfortable or likely to restrict your ability to breathe. These myths are largely the result of ill-fitted corsets.

A custom-fitted corset will not constrict your ribcage, alter your breathing, or dig into the skin uncomfortably.

A custom-fitted corset is generally comfortable to wear for long periods of time. You can wear one with anything. A corset will look elegant with a long skirt or sexy with jeans. A well-made corset will last for years if you take proper care of it.

I make custom-fitted corsets to ensure that they are comfortable to wear. When I make a corset, I take your bust, waist, high hip, back width, side length measurements, and bra size. People’s bodies vary in all sorts of ways, and it’s important that your corset fit the particulars of your body. A corset that only fits your waist size or only fits your bra size is likely to not fit in some other way.

Next, before ever making the corset itself, I make a muslin. This is a prototype of what your corset will be like. You will try on the muslin to see how well it fits, and then I will make adjustments to create a better fitting version if it is necessary. In some cases, there may even be multiple muslins to ensure that your final corset is the best possible fit.

Durability is another feature of Tulgey Wood corsets.  I use spring steel bones as the garment support, which hold their shape over many uses. Plastic bones will often bend after the garment is worn, making the corset less comfortable, less useful, and less attractive.

I also use exterior boning casings rather than simply inserting the bones between seams, because it puts less strain on the corset, which makes for a more durable garment.

The corsets I make have a triple layer construction. This means there is a lining, an interlining, and a fashion fabric. This construction method makes it less likely the fabric will stretch and distort.

I take all pains to make sure the final corset will be both durable and beautiful. For instance, I match the pattern on the center front of the corset so that the fabric will line up more aesthetically.

The final result is a garment that will be elegant, comfortable, and supportive for years to come.
